Waiting for the Bridge - Frank Saunders

Based on the paintings of the Dutch artist Anton Pieck, the canal side scene shows a train waiting for a typical lift bridge to be lowered to enable it to continue its journey.

The date is circa 1905 and the tramway is metre gauge.

The locomotive was built by SLM Winterthur.   The artist in his railway and tramway paintings has very accurate locomotives and rolling stock.  The origins of this particular locomotive can be fairly accurately identified as one of two supplied to Utrecht, as only a few tram locomotives used in Holland were fitted with that somewhat unusual "Systeme Brown" boiler.

The rolling stock and buildings are all hand built as is the locomotive. The birds are hand carved and the figures have been adapted from commercial castings.
